I have started a bookkeeping business which I am trying to grow. I have joined BNI and attend Chamber of Commerce functions. I have sent letters to CPA about my services, have a web site and am a Certified QuickBooks Pro (so I am listed on thier site as well).

Any one else have any ideas on drumming up business or marketing that has worked for you?

Thanks,
Laurie

I don't know that you need to do any other marketing besides BNI, Chamber and CPA introductions. There's a lot of potential business in those three areas! (If you have thick skin, and the discipline to do it regularly, there's always cold-calling.)

Chambers are always looking for ways to add value to chamber memberships. Can you provide a service to chamber members that does not directly promote your business, but can result in you positioning yourself as an expert in your field? Propose a workshop or seminar to your chamber!

There may be other associations that you can provide the same added value to. Your current clients may belong to industry/business associations. Ask them. Then contact the association and let them know that you provide educational sessions that are valuable to their membership.

In developing your marketing strategy think about your best or ideal client. How did you meet them? What kind of business is it? If you enjoy working with this client, you may want to work with other businesses in the same industry. Or you may want to market to other businesses that your ideal client associates with.

An example: your ideal client is a contractor. You can specialize in bookkeeping with contractors. Or you can have your ideal client recommend you to business owners they associate with - heating and cooling, interior decorators, landscapers, roofing & insulation, building trades, architects, engineers, etc.

It's the difference between farming and hunting. Farmers plant seeds in their fields, fertilize, water, and ultimately harvest. Hunters go out in the woods, and pursue or wait for the animal, and kill them. You'll be happier being a farmer than hunter. Work a market, provide value, and business will come your way!

Good luck,

Laurie;

I've been writing articles on small business topics for years, and have been reprinting them online at another site like Ryze lately. Search engines have picked them up and as a result there has been increased traffic to my website.

You might try business/transactional lawyers. They are setting up new businesses all the time and frequently the new businesses need bookkeeping help. Good luck. -- Joel
